Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Religious conventions are vital social gatherings that extend beyond their spiritual purposes to include significant contributions to local economies. These events often attract large numbers of attendees, stimulating economic activities in sectors such as hospitality, transportation, trade, and tourism. In Minna Local Government Area, Niger State, religious conventions have become prominent annual events, drawing participants from across and beyond Nigeria. As attendees require accommodations, food, and various other services, these events provide opportunities for local businesses and artisans to thrive. Despite their potential, there is limited empirical research on how these conventions specifically contribute to economic development within Minna LGA (Usman & Sule, 2024). This study aims to explore these contributions, providing insights into the relationship between religious conventions and local economic growth.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While religious conventions in Minna LGA offer spiritual and communal benefits, their economic potential remains underexplored. Stakeholders often overlook the opportunities these events provide for boosting local economies, leading to inadequate planning and support. Challenges such as poor infrastructure, inadequate accommodation, and lack of strategic partnerships hinder the ability of conventions to maximize economic contributions. This study seeks to address these issues by examining the specific ways in which religious conventions impact economic activities in Minna LGA and identifying areas for improvement.
